Getting your hair summer ready

This is not a paid post.

Hair guru Michael Charalambous is a great believer in looking after your locks. “Using too many heated appliances will dry them out,” he says.

You need a good cut to start with that works with your natural hair texture and then styling it will be easy. Of course, it is hard to get your own locks as sleek and smooth as your hairdresser does. Sometimes, the temptation of popping into a blow-dry bar is irresistible.

Michael points out that stylists who work in them may not be as thoroughly trained as those in a good salon which gives rise to bad habits. That means they could be holding the hairdryer too close to your precious strands.

They could also be using the wrong type of brush. Metal brushes will dry your hair faster but if not used properly they can cause damage or result in a blow dry that frizzes as soon as you step outside.

They can also rely on straighteners or other appliances to get the end result which is not good for the health of your hair.

Your tresses should not be overloaded with product. It might make it easier for the stylist but the next day your hair will be lifeless.

Before starting the blow-dry the stylish should always ask you questions such as where do you part your hair?

If you want to have regular blow-dries, Michael advises speaking to your hairdresser. They make be able to offer you a special rate. At least you will know whoever styles your hair will be trained to the salon’s standards.

To ensure your hair is in tip-top condition, use a masque once a week and ensure you get your ends trimmed every six to eight weeks.
