Cire Trudon is, reputedly, the world’s oldest candlemaker.
Supplier to Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France, it has for hundreds of
years produced exquisite distinctive scents that make burning its wares a real
treat.
There is also now a range genderless eau de parfums which
has taken its cue from the company’s heritage but been given a contemporary twist. My favourites are the
mysterious Révolution (Maison Trudon, Chiltern Street, London and Selfridges,
£165) created by renowned perfumer Lyn Harris.
The streets of Paris during the
revolution were thick
with smoke and gunpowder. This is a modern interpretation of the scent with
notes of smoke, wood and leather laced with incense. It is warm and musky.
Olim (£165), also by Lyn Harris, was inspired by the French royal court. Rich
and decadent, this is a cocktail of lavender and bergamot with a hint of anise
warmed up with vanilla and spices with a touch of earthiness.
There is something special about having your home filled
with scent during the winter. Especially if the candle burning is a Cire
Trudon. My favourite, Ernesto (from £78), a delicious melange of rum and
bergamot underpinned with notes of moss, leather and amber, is now available in a
lovely gold-leaf hand-painted glass container. (Its other renowned fragrances,
El Kader and Nazareth also come in three sizes in this exquisite
packaging.)
