Revitalised at Daniel Galvin

When hair is freshly coloured it always looks lovely and shiny so your hair also appears smoother and in better condition. Unfortunately, for us and fortunately for the salon, especially over the summer months, our tresses fade all too quickly and it has to be redone.

The lovely sun in Umbria and the glimpses that it has made here had wreaked havoc with mine so it was back to the Daniel Galvin salon to see my trusted colourist Daisy Twyman and for her to use her magic touch and restore my hair back to glory.

Daisy said it certainly needed a refresh. “Over the summer, we tend to wash our hair more and, as we know, with every shampoo the colour washes out.” Although, she hastens to add, products formulated especially for coloured hair can help prevent colour fade. Using harsh shampoos will strip the colour from your hair very quickly.

If your hair is really porous, it might not be able to hold on to the colour so it can fade quickly. Those that have a lot of white hair, Daisy says, may notice that it feels coarser as the colour fades and in some cases turns frizzier making it harder to style yourself. Choosing a darker hue may help it last longer.

“Conditioning treatments help to keep hair soft and manageable.  Try to let your hair dry naturally and keep away from other heated applicances as they all contribute to damaging the hair making it more porus. You may find that if your hair is curly you will not have to wash it as frequently as those with straight hair.

A good staple to have to hand is Color Wow Root Cover Up, ” says Daisy. I can vouch for this, it covers regrowth well and will last until you next shampoo your hair. Once you have tried it, you will wonder how you ever managed without it.

After doing the roots, Daisy took the colour through to the ends and left it for a good five minutes. Hey presto, I was once again a glossy brunette.

I left the salon with a spring in my step and feeling a new person.

Chic hair

Styling and colouring your hair  simply  always makes you look classy. However, as we all know what looks effortless can be hard to achieve.

Since the experts at Daniel Galvin have got their hands on my locks, they have never looked better. No brassy highlights just simple colour that looks elegant. The team are masters at getting people guessing has she or hasn’t she had her hair coloured.

After colour supremo Daisy Twyman decided to take my hair darker – back to its natural colour – I find buying clothes easier. I am also able to wear the right colour make-up for my skin tone rather than having to choose hues that match my hair.

“The trick to always looking elegant is to stay within a couple of shades of your own hue,” says Daisy. “Make sure the colour suits you otherwise it won’t look nice. It has to work with your skin and eyes and has to be the right tone and depth. One colour does not mean one tone. The ends should be lighter as should the hairline.”

Get it right and it could have the same effect as a facelift, get it wrong and you could end up looking older, tired and washed out.

Daisy also points out that you have to also take into consideration the light. In summer when it is warmer than in winter. “You should always evaluate your hair every time you colour it,” Daisy advises.

Each time Daisy has done my hair it simply gets better. I honestly thought that it after the last time it could not be improved upon,  but I was wrong.  It took a couple of years for all the highlights to grow out so now my hair is in better condition and as it is darker it looks healthier  and has not faded as quickly as it did when it was lighter. It will be interesting to see how it fares over the summer.

After a stunning blow-dry by Emma, I felt and looked glamorous. Looking good on the outside made me feel happy on the inside.

Updating colouring techniques

After a long party season and a drab January my tresses were in dire need of being put into the hands of Daisy Twyman at Daniel Galvin. She is in one of the best colourists I have ever been to. I have tried dozens and mostly with not great results. She is truly a find.

We decided that we would take out the rest of the blonde that was in my hair although keeping it lighter round the face. We all know that having your hair too dark or too light can age you dramatically.

Sometimes you can feel something is not quite right even if you have found your perfect shade. According to Daisy, it may just be a matter of updating the technique that your colourist uses.

Having your locks look as if they are your natural hue is what many of us crave. It is also bang on-trend for this spring and summer. Hair should also look as if it is low maintenance – even if it does require a professional blow-dry.

“If your hair is curly, highlights can tend to disappear,” cautions Daisy. “So you may want to opt for chunky ones or keep to one shade. Whatever type of hair that you have, it should never look solid."

A good colourist will ensure that it appears as if you have lots of different tones. To mimic natural hair you can also add a lighter shade to the tips to break up heavy colour.

Daisy also suggests asking your technician about finger painting. “Painting colour on to the middle to the tips of the hair with fingers as opposed to brushes gives an effortless look.”

To create movement, especially if you wear your hair up a lot, she suggests colouring pieces a little bit away from the root on the underneath sections so you don’t have to have the colour done too often.

As Emma skilfully blow-dried my hair I noticed the dramatic difference even though. It was only about half a shade darker. I loved it!
