New year, take care of your hair

This is not a paid post.

“The 1980s and 1990s were the days of the big blow-dries. Remember Dallas and Dynasty. Hair brushes had to be good and they were,” says mane man extraordinaire, Michael Charalambous whose clientele list reads like a Who’s Who.

“Today, they are weaker and not many can do the job. So many hairdressers and clients use heat styling tools such as straighteners to achieve the results they want.”

According to Michael, the industry has been flooded by gadgets which means a move away from artistry to machines.  “If the products on the market are so good why are so many people’s heads of hair in such bad condition? Companies are always going to try and sell you the next best thing,” he says.

He points out conditioners and treatments will help but they will not eradicate the effects of too many blow-dries.

Hair is a fibre and needs to be looked after. Over-styling can damage your tresses. If the cuticle is defaced and the underneath of the hair strand is exposed it becomes dry and loses its natural shine. Colouring can also create havoc with your hair, especially if you are using bleach.

If you think putting your hair into a ponytail is a good solution for bad hair days, you may want to think again. If you pull it too tight the hair can break. Also, it is advisable not to wear one every day.
You should also not over brush your hair. Again this can be harmful. So what is a girl to do?

Well, according to Michael, the less you do to your hair the better. “Firstly, if your hair is in bad condition this is the time to get it cut so that it has time to grow for the summer.”

He recommends the Kérastase Nutritive range of products to help get your hair back into good condition. It is one of the best ranges on the market. As far as brushes go, ask your hairdresser which they think is good for your hair. Michael likes Nano-Thermal Ionic hair brushes.

He advocates working with small sections of hair to achieve the best results.

Your New Year resolution should be: take more care of your crowning glory.
