Dealing with straw-like hair

This is not a paid post.

I was reading an article in one of the papers the other day about a woman complaining that she has straw-like hair. What amazed me was that she then went to the hairdressers and put more highlights in her hair.

When it looks like you have a haystack on your head, it is usually the result of hair that has been coloured too much and/or is the result of having been exposed to too much heat. So, if you are constantly using straighteners and working with a dryer on high settings, you need to stop. Switch to medium on your dryer and try to cut down your use of heated appliances. You also need to think about the colour that you are putting on your hair.

Well-conditioned hair

A great tip from mane man Michael Charalambous is do the roots as normal when they need doing. “Our colourists then take pieces of lighter bits of the hair and places them into a foil with conditioner – no colour. This method is kinder to the hair as it is not bleached. We put the base colour in between the foils. This looks natural as hair is never one colour. It also ensures you do not look as if you are wearing a wig,” says Michael.

He also points out that you do not have to use a heavy tint, especially, if you are not covering grey. “You can use an oil or gel-based colour which is milder and therefore, less harmful."

If you do not normally have highlights and just use a single colour, Michael recommends a “colour bath” (colour mixed with conditioner) to refresh the colour and make the tone richer.

Always condition the mid-length to ends of your hair even if it is fine.
